In Memoriam: Local 1303's Eddie Zimnoch

Ed Zimnoch

Edward "Eddie" Zimnoch, former president of our Local 1303 Municipal Chapter and member of the Council 4 Executive Board,  died unexpectedly Dec. 11. He was 65.

Eddie was employed with the Town of West Hartford Public Schools Maintenance Department and retired in 2009 after 30 years of service. He served as a chapter president of AFSCME Local 1303-061, representing the West Hartford Public School skilled trades workers, for more than 25 years.

Ed also served as the president of AFSCME Local 1303, the statewide voice of more than 400 chapters of municipal and board of education workers. He proudly served for 8 years as a vice president on the Council 4 Executive Board and for 2 years as a vice president on the Greater Hartford Labor Council of the AFL-CIO.

"Ed was a strong voice for all workers -- public or private, municipal or state, union or non-union," said Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano. "We will miss his leadership, his passion and his commitment to union solidarity."

Eddie participated in numerous labor functions both locally and nationwide. Ed was never one to back down from standing up for what was right. He helped shape Council 4's push against reckless privatization and outsourcing, energetically embraced our political and legislative action program and supported numerous other causes, including our campaign to improve conditions for state military veterans.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eddie's family, including his wife of 40 years, Janice Zimnoch, his children Elizabeth and Edward, Jr. and their families, and his brothers Robert and Stanley

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 124 Scantic Rd., East Windsor, CT 06088.
