Higher Ed Members Host Legislators

Against the backdrop of a new legislative session and a budget deficit, the Southern Connecticut State University Chapter of Local 2836, the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty, hosted a meet-and-greet with state lawmakers Jan. 23 in New Haven.

Legislative guests included Comptroller Kevin Lembo; State Sen. and Labor Committee Co-Chair Gary Holder-Winfield; State Rep. and Appropriations Committee Co-Chair Toni Walker; State Rep. and Screening Committee Co-Chair Linda Gentile; and State Rep. and Deputy House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz.

To a person, the lawmakers urged union members to be vocal, whether it's e-mailing, phoning, visiting the Capitol or submitting testimony to committees via e-mail.

"We need to hear you voice," Holder-Winfield said.

Walker added, "It's important that you become pro-active."

SCSU/SUOAF Chapter President Patricia Zibluk (pictured below, standing, at far right, while listening to Aresimowicz), stressed the importance of protecting the quality services union members provide to students and the broader community through the state university system (Central, Eastern, Southern and Western).

"What we do is important to students and makes an impact," she observed.
