Guilford Custodians Go Pink

Members of AFSCME Local 1303-010, Guilford Board of Education Custodial and Maintenance Employees, are doing their part to strike out cancer. And they’ve got the pink t-shirts to prove it.

Every Friday during October, all 31 union members wore special pink t-shirts to focus attention on Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to Local 1303-010 President Robert Joyce, proceeds from the sale of t-shirts (to union members and friends) raised $500, which the union donated to Closer to Free, a joint effort by Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital to fund cancer research and patient care.

“We thought it would be a good idea to do something that supports the local community,” Joyce said. “Everybody enjoyed wearing the shirts and doing their part to help fight cancer. We hope to do this again and raise more money.”

Joyce thanked Local Union Vice President Bill Riordan and Treasurer Wayne Garrison for all their help in promoting the campaign and creating the logo for the shirts. He also recognized Guilford Schools Superintendent Paul Freeman for agreeing to allow employees to wear the t-shirts.
