Council 4 Members Mobilize For Legislative Lobby Day
Sen. Pro Tem Don Williams of Brooklyn addresses Council 4 members and retirees during our annual Lobby Day on May 27.
Council 4's annual Lobby Day on June 27 was a great success, with nearly 200 Council 4 members and retirees meeting legislators and making their collective voice heard on urgent issues like health care reform, a fair budget and aid to cities and towns to preserve services.
"We are asking legislators to raise more revenues, but not from those who struggle paycheck to paycheck," Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano told participants. "We need to make better choices. We only want to tax those who can best afford to pay them and who have enjoyed round after round of tax breaks."
Among the many legislators who greeted and spoke to our members were Senate President Donald Williams (D-29), Sen. Tony Guglielmo (R-35), House Majority Leader Denise Merrill (D-54), Rep. Andrew Fleischmann (D-18) and Rep. Joe Aresimowicz (D-30).
Evelyn Rodriguez, left, of Local 269 and Tonya Smith of Local 478 were among the members participating in Lobby Day.
"Council 4's Lobby Day provides an effective mechanism for union members to meet their elected officials and discuss the issues that matter," said Local 1471' Jim Tedford, who works for the Vernon Department of Public Works. "It allows us to send a message that yes, we are indeed important to the political process."
