Continuing their long tradition of supporting community causes, the members of AFSCME Local 1471 donated $750 to Vernon 8th Annual Summer Days Carnival that runs through July 23 on the site of the former Golfland on Rte 83.
“We sincerely appreciate the way AFSCME members continue to step up to the plate to support a wonderful cause. Local 1471 is our single biggest donor outside of individual patrons,” Deputy Mayor Steve Wakefield, noting that carnival proceeds benefit Fidelco, the Rockville Exchange, Maple Grove’s Kidsafe program and summer camp scholarships presented through the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department.
Local 1471 represents employees in the Vernon Department of Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department, and Water Pollution Control Authority and Animal Control.
“We take great pride in the work we do for Vernon residents and businesses,” said union Vice President Mark Rizzo, an equipment operator. “The Summer Days Carnival is a great event that makes our community stronger and better. We’re pleased to do our part to keep it going and to help the kids.”
