In memoriam: Thomas Pekrul

Council 4 mourns the passing of former AFSCME Local 387 President Thomas W. Pekrul, who died Dec. 28, 2012.

Tom worked for the Department of Correction for 23 years, serving the public as a Correction Officer. He was also President of AFSCME Local 387, representing the Cheshire Correctional Complex, for more than 4 years.

Tom fought tenaciously to protect and advance the rights of his co-workers at DOC, bringing prison safety concerns to the public eye

"Tom and I worked side by side for most of our 20 plus years in DOC," recalled Council 4 Staff Representative and former Local 387 President Jeff Scanlon. "We were involved with the union right from the onset of our employment. We walked the picket line during the 1977 strike. He was a true friend who will be greatly missed."

After retiring from the DOC in 1995, Tom came to work at Council 4, where he served as a Staff Representative assigned to state employee bargaining units.

We extend our condolences to  Tom's family, including his wife Sheila, a member of our AFSCME Local 1579 in Torrington, and his daughters Cameron and Morgan (also a member of Local 1579).

Contributions in Tom's memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2080 Silas Deane Hwy, 2nd Floor, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
