New Haven Workers Challenge Mayor
Union members march on City Hall, saying "Show some guts, stop the cuts!"
Concerned by Mayor John DeStefano’s efforts to slash public services and refusal to listen to workers’ ideas , New Haven workers, their families and their community allies marched on New Haven City Hall to meet with Mayor John DeStefano.
Hundreds of workers marched from High School in the Community and joined up with other workers on the New Haven Green before proceeding inside for DeStefano's monthly "Mayor's Night In."
Union members from Council 4, UNITE-HERE, CILU and others participated in the rousing rally that shined a light on the DeStefano administration's anti-employee practices.
“This mayor has decided that he is going to continue an assault on workers throughout this city,” shouted Greater New Haven Labor Council President Bob Proto.
A visibly uncomfortable DeStefano tried to debate New Haven school custodian David Pellino, who challenged the mayor over his efforts to destroy 200 school custodial jobs through privatization. "You've taken that olive branch and snapped it over our knee," Pellino told DeStefano. Pellino captured the conversation on this YouTube video.
