The Latest on Layoffs and Service Cuts
All told, there have been close to 200 layoffs. The governor has publicly threatened up to as many as 4,000 job cuts in the coming days and weeks, along with service cuts and office closings.
If you receive a layoff notice it is important that you report it right away to your worksite’s union representative so that your contractual rights can be protected going forward. Please remember that when you are in a union, you are never alone.
What is called for here is the political courage to flatten middle management, cut waste, fraud and abuse and ask the rich to pay their fair share of taxes. Instead the governor and some legislators are pushing the largest cuts in public services in our state's history; all to let the richest 1% to pay taxes at half the rate of the rest of us.
We call on the governor and legislative leaders to take a step back and consider the irreparable harm they will do to Connecticut’s quality of life. It may be frightening to tax the rich in an election year -- at least to the political class -- but for the vast majority of us, these are times that demand courage.
If you haven’t done so already, please contact your legislators immediately and urge them to make better choices other than layoffs and service cuts.
More to come.
