Building bridges with the community has been a motivating force for Anthony Nolan, a New London Patrol Officer and member of AFSCME Local 724.
As a 19-year veteran on the force, Nolan views part of his job as “trying to close the gap between the police and the community. It encourages me to see the relationships I can build and the help I can provide.”
The politically active Nolan hopes to take the next step in his progression by running for State Representative in New London’s 39th House District. He is the Democratic candidate in a crowded four-way race to succeed Chris Soto, who resigned his seat to become Gov. Ned Lamont’s legislative director.
The election to fill the 39th House seat is one of five special elections set for Feb. 26, 2019. (Click here to learn more about Council 4’s candidate endorsements in these races.)
Nolan is presently serving his fourth term on the New London City Council. His passion for politics is consonant with his love for community policing.
“Politics is about making a difference for those I live around who have asked me to be the voice of the voiceless and to represent those who need representation,” he said.
Nolan’s candidacy for the House of Representatives has received numerous endorsements from community and labor organizations, including the Connecticut AFL-CIO, Council 4 and Local 724.
“Anthony brings a wealth of firsthand experience being a working police officer, a union member in good standing and politician that will allow him a unique understanding on many issues important to our members and New London residents,” said New London Police Officer and Local 724 President Todd Lynch.
Union endorsements mean a great deal to Nolan.
“The union is a brotherhood and sisterhood that stands up and fights for you,” he reflected. “It means a great deal to have the support of the people who stand with you every day.”
