Why Join?
- Do you want to build a better and more secure economic future for you and your family?
- Are you hurting from a lack of quality, affordable healthcare coverage?
- Have you ever been unfairly disciplined by your supervisor or forced to accept a demotion, suspension or other punishment you didn’t deserve?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to consider forming a union with AFSCME. With more than 1.6 million active and retired members nationwide (including 30,000 active members in Connecticut), AFSCME is the strongest and most respected public services union in the country.
We consistently fight for and secure the best wages, benefits, and working conditions for our members across Connecticut. Since so many of the workers’ rights that we hold dear are impacted by the actions of elected officials, who dictate the funding for all public services, we maintain a strong presence in the corridors of government, fighting to protect our members and holding politicians accountable for their actions. We stand ready to fight for you and your colleagues.

Welcome to AFSCME Council 4's "Get Organized" Campaign!
Organizing is a labor union’s most critical mission. By aiding workers in finding their voice and forming their own union, our committed organizers are expanding the number of working people who are protected from the cruelty of corporate greed, the whims of the ultra-wealthy, and the indifference of politicians who forget who they serve. By bringing new workers into the union family, we strengthen the voice of working people across Connecticut and increase the power of every worker. Without organizing, the labor movement can’t survive—because organizing is the lifeblood of everything we do. It is the oxygen that keeps the labor movement alive.
AFSCME GO—Get Organized—is our union’s nationwide campaign to grow our union by organizing new workers into AFSCME and strengthening the power of every local we represent. We believe our greatest defense against attacks on public services, workers’ rights, and union power is a larger, more active, and more united membership. Through this campaign, we call on unorganized workers to come together to form new AFSCME locals, and we engage our current members and retirees to help bring their coworkers into the union and build real workplace solidarity.
AFSCME launched AFSCME GO in response to escalating political and economic threats facing working people and the public services our communities depend on. Budget cuts, privatization, and coordinated anti-union agendas threaten not only jobs and wages, but also retirement security, health care, workplace safety, and the fundamental right to organize. In this moment, we know organizing is not optional—it is essential. When we grow, we protect what we’ve built and gain the strength to fight for more.
At the heart of AFSCME GO is our commitment to organizing new AFSCME locals by empowering workers to stand together and claim a collective voice on the job. We work side by side with workers who want representation—educating them about their rights, building trust and unity in the workplace, and guiding them through the process of forming a local under the AFSCME umbrella. Every new local strengthens our bargaining power and our ability to defend workers' rights as well as public services across Connecticut.
AFSCME GO is also a call to action for our existing members. Organizing is not just the work of staff—it belongs to all of us. We ask our members to talk with their coworkers, welcome new workers into our union family, and stay engaged in the life of their locals. The message is simple and powerful: when we grow, we win. The more workers we organize, the more power we have to secure fair contracts, protect pensions and benefits, and stop harmful policies before they take root.
