Legislative and Political Assistant

PURPOSE:

Council 4 seeks a Legislative and Political Assistant to further our statewide and local political efforts. Legislative and Political Assistants will focus on directly engaging Council 4’s diverse membership in politics, recruiting and developing local political activists, providing political context, lobbying and education, training, and working as a team with the legislative department, staff, coalition teams, and members. This position is designed to support the legislative and political goals set forth by Council 4 and AFSCME International leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support Council 4 members, locals, and staff in building power to achieve statewide electoral, political action, and advocacy goals.
  • Work directly with local unions to assist them in building long-term political power through local election strategies, grassroots political organizing, digital engagement, community organizing, and other power-building strategies related to state or local political goals.
  • Collaborate with legislative and communications staff in developing strategies, goals, and tactics that support local union political engagement.
  • Support and expand efforts to further Council 4’s equity and social justice agenda.
  • Identify, recruit, train, and support members to engage in political action and advocacy.
  • Create lists in VAN, Hustle, and other programs for canvassing, text messaging, email, and phone banking.
  • Design campaign material, logos, slogans, and graphics for campaigns.
  • Increase member participation in the AFSCME political program.
  • Assist with the political endorsement process.
  • This is a field staff position that will allow staff to flex hours due to weekend and evening responsibilities.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1 year of experience with member-driven organizations related to legislative and/or political actions.
  • Background in union mobilization, political/legislative advocacy, electoral, and grassroots organizing campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse membership.
  • Experience in developing and executing written plans for accomplishing stated objectives.
  • Experience in developing materials and training members in small and large groups.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Connecticut political, electoral, and legislative processes.
  • Ability to perform and work well under deadlines/pressure.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work closely with staff, local leaders, and members.
  • Ability and stamina to work irregular and long hours and attend weekend and evening activities.
  • Must be eligible to become a state lobbyist.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Performs tasks independently, works under the limited supervision of the Council 4 Leadership with guidance from senior departmental staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is generally performed in a field setting, such as an office, state and municipal buildings, and outside, to include door knocking. Requires travel and a valid driver's license.
