AFSCME Council 4 is currently accepting applications for the position of Communications Coordinator.
PURPOSE:
Council 4 seeks a Communications Coordinator. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for communications strategy in organizing, contract, and other campaigns. Works closely with staff, locals, members and allies. The position is responsible for planning and coordinating the communications portion of campaigns for Locals and Council 4.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides communications training, with emphasis on electronic methods, for staff, locals, members and affiliates.
- Drafts print, electronic, and other materials, including updating and maintenance of Council 4 Website and links.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of a consistent and concerted online communications program.
- Works with staff to identify opportunities to engage members on issues.
- Drafts strategic planning of media activities, including the creation of podcasts, blogs, and similar online communications tools.
- Creates and coordinates data collection strategies.
- Identifies strategies to augment member communication.
- Assist in planning and carrying out news conferences and media events.
- Draft news releases, editorials, leaflets, brochures, and letters to the editor.
- This is a field staff position and will allow staff to flex hours due to weekend and evening responsibilities.
- Mentor lower rank departmental job classes.
- As needed, this position’s responsibilities include any lower rank departmental job classes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3 years’ experience with member-driven organizations related to communication and union actions.
- Must have strong and proven persuasive writing and design ability in online advocacy.
- Working knowledge of written and electronic communications involving the labor movement and Council 4.
- Experience with media relations including pitching stories, preparing for interviews and coordinating press events.
- Ability to work independently, to use initiative to execute projects that may be vaguely defined and to work under tight deadlines.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Performs tasks independently, works under the limited supervision of the Council 4 Leadership with guidance from senior departmental staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally performed in field setting, such as, an office, state, and municipal building and outside, to include door knocking. Requires travel and a valid driver's license.
