ORGANIZER POLITICAL ACTIVIST


PURPOSE:
A successful candidate will be responsible for successfully conducting and running organizing and member political activities. This is an entry-level position with promotional opportunities. The successful candidate will perform economic and social justice activities associated with campaigns, organizing committees, make worksite and home visits, perform voter assessments, and plan campaigns implementing the AFSCME Organizing Model (i.e., targeting, pre-petition campaigns, election campaigns, card-check campaigns, and first contract campaigns). May assist the Political and Legislative, Education, and Communications Departments as 
needed. May be required to register as a lobbyist.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Executes the “Organizing Model”, including internal, external, and community organizing.
• Explores organizing targets to gather data and information, builds a list of nonmembers, and assesses interest.
• Conducts one-on-one organizing, recruits supporters and leaders, and guides their activities on behalf of members and nonmembers. 
• Recruits volunteer member organizers (VMO) from within the AFSCME Council 4 membership.
• Works collectively with other unions in the labor movement.
• Develops broad representative organizing committees of member and non-member leaders.
• Visits work sites and homes to communicate with members and nonmembers for political and organizing purposes.
• Designs and develops organizing, political, and public affairs materials for campaigns.
• Responsible for data entry of members and nonmembers into Union software.
• Develop reports on the progress of activities, developments, and progress of organizing activity, including work and home site visits or membership activity.
• Requires the ability and willingness to work some evening hours and weekends.
• Works on AFSCME Strong, PEOPLE, and Next Wave campaigns.
• Frequent in-state and occasional out-of-state travel will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two years’ experience in union organizing/involvement or any equivalent combination of education and 
experience. 
• Knowledge of union organizing practices and principles; basic knowledge of labor laws, and union organizing; knowledge of anti-union employer tactics.
• Understanding of political campaigns, elections, and lobbying. 
• Possession of leadership and motivational skills.
• Demonstration of good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to research and create reports as needed.
• A motivated individual who is a self-starter who takes initiative and is also a team player.
• A demonstrated commitment to union democracy and supporting and developing members’ voices and leadership in their union.
• Computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, online platforms, database software).
• Comfortable working in a diverse environment.
• Fluent bilingual skills are desirable.
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Work is generally performed in field settings, such as: an office, state, and municipal building, and outside, to include door knocking. Requires travel and a valid driver’s license.
