Solidarity Carried Russell Library Workers Across the Finish Line

Solidarity Carried Russell Library Workers Across the Finish Line
As the newly elected President of AFSCME Local 1303-085, representing the dedicated staff at the Russell Library, our bargaining team wasn’t sure what to expect heading into negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. After gathering input from all of our members, we came to the table with a clear list of priorities that would protect the quality services and programs we provide to our community.
We engaged in good-faith negotiations with the Russell Library Company and, while challenging at times, we ultimately reached a tentative agreement that had us ready to move forward.
Following the October 1st Finance Committee’s approval of the necessary authorization of funds, we attended the Common Council meeting where a motion was made and passed to fully execute our Union contract. We were elated—only to be knocked down later by an eleventh-hour motion to reconsider, a move that triggered three additional meetings and left us feeling disheartened.
But then something remarkable happened.

On Dec. 3, the Common Council did the right thing and approved our new contract. Thanks to our incredible Russell Library Company family, and the overwhelming support from our community, we experienced solidarity unlike anything we have ever felt.
Hearing just over three hours of public comment from all of you reinforced what we already knew: we are stronger together. From the bottom of our hearts—thank you for standing with us, supporting us, and helping us turn the page.
Brianna Gagnon
President, Local 1303-085
