On March 18th, Staff Rep. Cherlyn Poindexter and Local 3429 President Hyclis Williams joined part-time Paraeducators for a FREE 6-week Para Pro Prep Class. This program was negotiated by Staff Rep. Cherlyn Poindexter, who identified almost 200 part-time paraeducators performing the same work as full-time staff but who were not members of Local 3429. The Union recognized the need to create a pathway to full-time employment; New Haven Public Schools Superintendent Madeline Negrón agreed to offer this program to part-time paraeducators to help them transition into full-time Paraeducator positions. As full-time employees, these educators will have the opportunity to become members of AFSCME Local 3429.

Poindexter and Williams took the opportunity to speak directly with attendees, encouraging them to take this important step toward building a rewarding career with New Haven Public Schools and becoming part of AFSCME Local 3429. Union membership provides access to valuable benefits and protections negotiated through collective bargaining.  These benefits include medical benefits, higher wages, educational incentives and professional development opportunities, job security, workplace representation, and a stronger voice in advocating fair working conditions.

Local 3429 remains committed to supporting paraeducators as they advance their careers and strengthen our union through solidarity and membership growth.
